Soccer competes for first seed in the conference

On Oct. 29, the Indiana University Kokomo soccer team competed against Point Park University for the conference championship.

Both teams had identical records in the conference, 8-0-1, and the stakes were high. The game would decide the regular season conference champion. The winner would also get a buy-in for the conference tournament, meaning they would not have to play anyone in the first round and automatically move on to the second.

Point Park took control early, scoring two goals within the first 30 minutes. The first goal came off a penalty kick. The second was off an own-goal score from the Cougars, being credited to Chanell Britten.

The Cougars put plenty of shots on the goal, but none could find the back of the net. Point Park held onto their lead in the second half by playing defensively with the ball. They were able to protect their lead, as the game ended 2-0.

After the game, Point Park celebrated and refused to shake hands with IU Kokomo.

“I just thought it was a little unprofessional,” Freshmen Mya Hernandez said after the game. “It was frustrating when the game gets taken out of your hands like that; they played it smart to hold the ball and take control of the game, but we will see them again.”

The Cougars are now seeded second in the conference with the highest placement in program history. They will square off against Rio Grande University and Brescia University for the conference tournament and wait to see their potential final opponent.
