As a senior at Indiana University Kokomo, preparing to enter the professional world can feel
both exciting and overwhelming. Attending the Cougar Career Fair on March 11 was a perfect
opportunity to put the skills I’ve been developing at IUK into practice and get a real sense of what employers are looking for. Even though I had a general idea of what to expect from
previous career fairs, this year felt different. Between nerves and anticipation, I realized how
much preparation really makes a difference. Practicing my elevator pitch, researching
companies ahead of time, and thinking through potential questions helped me feel confident
walking into the event.
One of the most meaningful parts of the day was attending with classmates. Watching how each of my fellow IUK students approached recruiters in their own way was inspiring. Some jumped straight into conversations with confidence, while others took more time to observe and plan their approach. Seeing my peers push themselves outside of their comfort zones was motivating, and I learned a lot just by listening to the questions they asked and how they
introduced themselves. It reminded me that career fairs at IUK aren’t just about landing a
job—they’re also about practicing professionalism, building confidence, and learning from those around you.
Networking didn’t stop with recruiters. I also connected with other IUK students and attendees at the fair, sharing goals, career insights, and advice. It was interesting to see how each student approached the event differently and what types of careers they were excited about. Talking with classmates reminded me how valuable the IUK community is—not just for classes, but also for learning from each other and building a supportive professional network that can extend beyond campus.
What stood out most to me during the event was the importance of preparation. Having a clear elevator pitch and knowing a bit about the organizations I spoke with made conversations flow smoothly. I also noticed how approachable most recruiters were—they genuinely wanted to meet students, which helped reduce some of the anxiety I had before arriving. Observing the event overall, I realized that everyone there is trying to learn and connect, which makes it less intimidating than it might seem.
Walking away from the career fair, I feel more confident about networking and professional
interactions. It’s not always easy to put yourself out there, but practice, preparation, and
observation make it easier over time. If I were to attend another career fair, I know it would feel more natural now that I’ve had this experience. Moving forward, I hope to continue improving my networking skills, particularly in following up with contacts and maintaining professional relationships.
For IUK seniors preparing to step into their careers, the Cougar Career Fair is more than just a one-day event—it’s a chance to practice professionalism, make connections, and gain confidence. Whether you’re speaking with recruiters, learning from classmates, or networking with peers, every conversation is an opportunity to grow. This year’s fair reminded me that being an IUK student comes with unique advantages: a supportive campus community, small class sizes, and hands-on preparation activities that make stepping into the professional world a little less intimidating.
