The College Democrats at IUK had their first meeting of the semester on Monday, September 22, 2025. Those who attended this callout meeting were introduced to President Rebecka Hoosier, Vice President Danny Hall, Faculty Advisor Dr. McFarland, and any other peers who attended. Throughout the meeting, leaders gave details on upcoming events, the history of the group, and different details that were relevant to local politics. For example, the potential for a new Howard County Trash Tax.
One of the main events that the group is focused on planning for this semester is a food drive, which will be in collaboration with the Food Finders Food Bank located in Lafayette.
Hoosier informed attendees that since the COVID-19 pandemic, food banks have been under a lot of stress and low on supply, which will likely be a continuing issue in the near future.
Students of IUK that attended this meeting expressed interest and excitement in the future of this student organization for a variety of reasons.

“As someone who’s majoring in sustainability, I’m hoping we can participate in some sort of community cleanup event,” said Sadie Parraga.
If there’s one thing everyone who attended can agree on, it’s that students on campus should be invested in politics, no matter where they land on the political spectrum. Attendees recognized that groups like these can help students get access to more accurate information about current events than what they might find on various social media sites. It was also agreed that politics impacts everyone, even if they aren’t aware of them.
“I absolutely think students should get involved, either Republican or Democrats. Whatever is happening in the world, students will find out, they will be impacted by it,” said Taylor O’Banion
President Rebecka Hoosier wanted to make it clear what the goal of this student club is, and what it is not. “I want students to know that we’re not a group that’s going to sit around, only talk about politics, or hate on the other side. We’re going to get out and actually help the community.”

Meetings will likely be once a month, but it is not yet decided when the October meeting will be. If any students are interested in more information about this club, they can reach leaders of the group through the Instagram page @kokomocollegedems, or contact President Rebecka Hoosier directly through her email, [email protected]
