Lin-Manuel Miranda is regularly a subject of the media, and this time is no exception. He’s being brought to life… literally. It’s the tenth anniversary of ‘Hamilton” and Alexander Hamilton is being multiplied daily. “How,” you may ask? Tiktok. Big creators across the platform have all filed onto one trend, transforming themselves into Miranda’s Alexander Hamilton. It is interesting, to say the least.
The trend itself is too good. Creators dress as Hamilton “sneaking” out of his house for his duel with Aaron Burr. It starts with the song in the second act, “Best of wives…” where Hamilton leaves for his duel with Burr, which we know is what ends his life. Oops, spoiler alert. The escape has been portrayed on TikTok through windows, doggy doors, and more.
The trend itself was created by username actuallyhamilt0n, also known as Zoe Coyle. This Irish 16-year-old was already dressed up as Hamilton, goatee and all, when the idea first came to her. The New York Times says, “She recorded her video at 2 a.m. in her grandmother’s house, where six dogs were barking at her. Now, friends call her “Ham,” and the school principal said, “I heard you’re famous.” A personal favorite for the public, and this author (I must admit), is a video by nibsgonewild, where a squirrel puppet is seen as Hamilton leaving the house. Celebrities and huge creators like Laufey and Trisha Paytas have also made videos. Others include creators like Ashby, whose Hamilton video created the start of a viral career.
Ashby really takes the cake at the “Hamilton” tenth anniversary screening. Dressed up in full Alexander Hamilton gear, she interviews members of the cast, including its very own Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda expresses his joy for the entire trend and specifically Ashby herself, stating, “You’re doing a great job too, it’s been so fun watching you become a superstar in real time.”
The commitment to the bit is truly admirable. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s creation is positively adored and always provides comedic relief. The man himself always takes each comment (and subsequently major trends) with pride.
